Study CarrelsThe Law Library has many study spaces available for law student and general use. These are normally unassigned except as follows: i) Numbered carrels may be reserved for a specified period during second term by first-year law students for the preparation of their moots. These carrels/workspaces are normally assigned from among those located in the Colin B. Mackay Reading Room and Mezzanine. ii) Second-year and third-year law students taking courses requiring the preparation of a paper which counts for 50% or more of their final mark, or those undertaking a directed research course, may reserve a numbered carrel for the term in which that course is taken, subject to verification through their instructor. iii) Students employed as research assistants by law faculty members also qualify for a reserved numbered carrel. Carrels will be assigned to those who qualify (see above) on a first-come, first-served basis ONLY after class lists are verified and after the Reference/Public Services Librarian is notified by the instructor that the course carries a requirement for a major paper as defined above. In the case of law faculty research assistants, written notification from the law faculty employer is required. No student may reserve more than one carrel in any term. Students who wish to reserve a carrel must apply at the Circulation Desk where they will receive a form which should be completed and displayed in a conspicuous spot in the assigned carrel at all times. Many carrels/workspaces are equipped with network drops and many have electrical power so that law students who have their own laptop or notebook computers can access the UNB network from these carrels. The library's wireless network is accessible from virtually all the carrels in the library. Important: Most, but not all, carrels have electrical power outlets. Users MAY NOT stretch extension cords across walkways or between tables to access power. Instead, users needing electrical power for a laptop must select a carrel with an outlet; a list of these is available at the Circulation Desk. The reservation of Law Library carrels is a privilege. Library carrels are work spaces. It is inappropriate and insecure to use them as repositories for personal belongings, plants, laptop computers, calculators, electronic devices, photographs, etc. Lockers are provided to law students on the first floor of Ludlow Hall to secure personal belongings. Students are required to keep their Law Library carrels in good order and to properly sign out and renew all materials in use. Students who do not comply with these standards will lose carrel privileges for the term. Law Library staff are not responsible for the loss of any personal items from carrels. |
