Extramural Borrowers (non-UNB / STU)All members of the general public, including UNB alumni and all law practitioners, may use the Law Library to consult our materials onsite and to access recommended law-related free websites and some licensed online services via our public-access computer workstations. Persons who are not directly affiliated with UNB or STU and who live in the greater Fredericton/Oromocto metropolitan area may apply at the Law Library Circulation Desk for an "Extramural Borrower's Card" (described below) which must be presented when they sign out materials. Members of the Law Society of New Brunswick who reside or practice in the greater Fredericton / Oromocto metropolitan area may apply for a "Practitioner Extramural Borrower's Card" and check out materials in person. When applying for a card, please present proof of Bar membership (CBA-NB or Law Society of New Brunswick card) or a business card. Practitioners with such a borrowing card are allowed to check out up to 99 Law Library books at one time. Students holding articling positions with firms in the greater Fredericton / Oromocto metropolitan area, and persons employed by such firms as legal secretaries, legal assistants, or para-legals, may apply for a "Practitioner Extramural Borrower's Card" upon presentation of a letter from the firm, on letterhead, attesting to the student's/employee's affiliation and indicating that the firm will be responsible for any items he/she borrows. Members of the New Brunswick Bar who reside outside the Fredericton / Oromocto area may borrow materials on interlibrary loan through the Law Society of New Brunswick (courthouse) Library that serves their geographical area. Please contact the UNB Law Library with any questions about this policy. A member of the general public may receive a "Public Extramural Borrower's Card" upon presentation of proof of permanent local residency (greater Fredericton/Oromocto area) and an operating local telephone number. The general public may borrow one item at a time; that item must be returned in order to borrow something else. Please apply for any type of "Extramural Borrower's Card" between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. "Extramural Borrower's Cards" are not issued at night or on weekends. There is a 24-hour turnaround time on the issuing of public "Extramural Borrower's Cards" so that library staff have sufficient time to prepare them. Users of any type of Law Library "Extramural Borrower's Card" should be aware that if any materials borrowed on their card are overdue, they will not be permitted to borrow again until the overdue item(s) are discharged. At this time, there is no charge for a Law Library "Extramural Borrower's Card." Law Library "Extramural Borrower's Cards" are NOT valid at other UNB libraries, and any "extramural" cards issued by other UNB libraries are not valid at the Law Library.
